Quick thought Session 25: Be a good person, even if no one is watching

In today’s world, we have social media controlling us and people trying to get their 15 minutes of fame. Everything is being captured, whether it be the good or the bad. But sometimes, you have to wonder: why does everything need to be recorded and showcased around the world for everyone to see? Can’t we just keep things private anymore? Can we just have these moments to ourselves? Why can’t someone do good without having to brag about it or be acknowledged for it?

Look, being recognized is great and all but it just feeds the ego and it takes away from the act of kindness that you have done for someone else. No one should do anything for anyone to just get famous or receive recognition, we should all try to be kind regardless of it. We become so deprived and have the need for people to “see us” that we forget that it all starts with us. We don’t need the spotlight and Ellen saying how great we are (I know it would be nice, lol) but we should know within ourselves that we are great without millions of people saying we are. We lose sight of what is really important and what it is to be kind.

There are incidences where people are caught on camera by strangers doing kind acts and these people are the most incredibly humbled human beings I have ever seen. They are the ones who weren’t even expecting the recognition and sometimes flat out shun it. They helped out because it was the right thing to do and not because they knew they would be on television the next day.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you do it because it’s the right thing to do. Someone will appreciate your act of kindness. The bonus is being recognized, but if you aren’t, you should know that what you did possibly saved or changed someone else’s life. I think that is the greatest gift of all.
