I am not hip to today’s music; I have literally become a stereotype of an old person. Dismissing today’s music as garbage, sticking to my oldie but goodie collection (80’s and 90’s music) and basically not knowing any of the latest musical artists. I am old (okay not that old but I might as well be based on the above description).
One day, I invited one of my students to talk to me during lunch because she seemed really withdrawn and I was really worried about her. I have had her the previous year in the 6th grade where I noticed she was bubbly and very sociable. This year in the 7th grade, she’s become a recluse, keeping to herself and stating that she doesn’t want any friends. This worried me greatly so I wanted to talk to her.
I asked her what she was interested in and she stated “Billie Eilish”. Being me and an old geezer, I was like “Uh, what, who?”. She stated she was a singer and that she enjoyed listening to her music. I was sitting at my desk at the time and opened up my laptop. I typed in YouTube.com on the URL bar and then typed in Billie Eilish once the site was open.
Whoa, my mind was blown. I honestly didn’t know how to respond about this young lady. She had a beautiful voice but her videos were somewhat disturbing. Being a judge-mental person who is trying to have an open mind simply stated, “wow, she’s interesting. A little depressing but interesting nevertheless.” My student laughed at my response and reassured me that she’s an amazing artist and that she was only 17 years old (5 years older than my student).
A few months went by and I stumbled upon an article: Billie Eilish Reveals Why She Always Covers Up In Baggy Clothes. I was intrigued and in awe of this young lady. Here she was stating her truth and the way she wanted to live her life. She reveals in the article that she does not want others to judge her based on her body, therefore she covers up to not encourage criticism. I can respect that.
We have so many musical artists showing off their bodies (note: there is nothing wrong with this), but then you have a 17-year-old who rather not be judge by the shape of her body and what it looks like. You are forced now to listen to her music, enjoy her visualization brought out by her music videos and appreciate her lyrics. I am sure people will still judge her on her outfit choices regardless but “fuck the haters”. She doesn’t care and the Universe does not either. She’s sending a message out to the Universe that she will create her own life path through her own navigational system. She will not allow society to navigate it, but only herself. She is truly gifted in living life through the Law of Attraction. With 31.4 million followers on instagram, millions of views on YouTube.com and a great future ahead of her, I say she’s doing a great job.
We should take her as an example as to live our own life. Create it the way we would want it to be. The majority may say “do this, do that”,”if you don’t do this you won’t be successful, if you do do this you will”. Screw them. Jot down your plan, visualize what you want and make it happen. People always want to be helpful and they have the best intentions (the ones that care about you) but they do not know what you want as much as you do. Do what makes you happy and what is right for you. If you want something, go for it and never let the mainstream voices control your destiny or your wardrobe choices.
